Slang vs. Jargon

Slang and jargon are two different types of language. Jargon is specialized terminology that is used by professional or avocational groups, and only understood by those in these groups.

To illustrate, here’s a bit of baseball jargon that any serious fan would know, but a casual fan might not:

Uncle Charlie was really working for him today.

Uncle Charlie is a nickname for a curve ball. The sentence above means that the pitcher’s curveball is effective at getting batters to strike out on this particular day.

Slang would be,

His curveball was lit today.

Lit, a slang term that means really great, doesn’t require knowledge of baseball to understand.

Slang is available to all and, according to Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips blog,

Slang is made of informal words and phrases that originate in speech, and often includes substitutions for formal words …

If you go to a conference, you’ll hear a lot of jargon, but probably not as much slang. Professional jargon is often a shortcut to making your message understood.

If you’ve ever heard two physicians talking about work, you’ve hard professional jargon. Rather than explaining that the patient had dizziness that was inner-ear related, one might say to the other, The patient was vertiginous, and I suspect benign positional vertigo. That tells much more of the story without using more words.

Slang can help give us a sense of belonging to a group, or it can quickly let us know we don’t belong. It can give the reader a sense that the writer understands them, that they have something in common. If you use it, be sure you know what you’re saying and that it sounds genuine. There’s nothing worse than a writer or speaker who tries to use slang they don’t understand to appear more hip, younger, or more connected than they are.

Email Marketing Automation: Why and How

Use a cloud storage app like Dropbox to store files securely and conveniently. You’ll have your data no matter what happens to your computer.Subscribe ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl5IQvLYNm5HaPgRguLnymg?sub_confirmation=1____________________________More Resources— How to Use Evernote to Organize Everything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knhr0OQ8mf8

My favorite tool is Dropbox, which I’ve been using for years. I first posted about Dropbox back in 2016, when this post was originally written. It is the easiest to use of all of the cloud storage apps I’ve used (and that’s quite a few).I use Dropbox every day for storing files, and for sharing them with others. Sometimes it’s just too big to send via email. I also love having my files with me everywhere I go. The app is free for desktop, phone and tablet. Dropbox gives you free storage, so if you don’t have large files you may be able to keep the free plan.
Why Cloud Storage is VitalHere’s a story that will help you understand why it’s so important. When my oldest daughter went to college, she went with a new MacBook. As an art major, she had Adobe applications and files on her computer that she had created for a graphic design course. We also bought her an external hard drive, and advised her to keep a backup in a cloud storage account.I bet you know what’s coming. Like most college students, setting up a Dropbox account and adding files didn’t seem too exciting and she never found the time to do it. One night a friend (?) spilled an entire can of Red Bull (mixed with ??? — we’ll never know) on her keyboard. You guessed it, the computer was ruined. The friend bought her a new computer, but she lost all of her art projects. It broke my heart, but it could so easily have been prevented.Computers, especially laptops, get lost, damaged, or stolen every day. So do external hard drives. I once thought I had lost 20 years’ worth of digital family photos because of an external hard drive failure. The least expensive company I could find online to try to recover the data was going to charge me $900. I cried in that poor sales guy’s ear. Loudly and ugly. Thankfully, I later found the files in a — you guessed it — cloud storage account I had forgotten about. The last time I got a new MacBookPro, the only thing I had to do to set it up was log in to Apple, Google, and Adobe, and download my Creative Suite apps. All of my files were in Dropbox, and once I signed in and installed the app, they were on my brand new computer, right where I’d put them on the old one. Cloud storage for the win.

Cloud Storage: How to Store Files With Dropbox

September 15, 2020 6:00 pm

I’ve written about how to use Evernote before, but the way I use it has evolved through the years I’ve used the app. There are so many different ways to use it and every user has their favorite. Whether I’m organizing recipes, information gathering for an upcoming trip, or working with clients, it’s been an invaluable app for me. If you know how to use Evernote, you’ll use less paper and you won’t forget things nearly as often.Subscribe ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl5IQvLYNm5HaPgRguLnymg?sub_confirmation=1____________________________MoreResources

1. Organize Information • Whether I’m organizing recipes, information gathering for an upcoming trip, or working with clients, it’s been an invaluable app for me. If you know how to use Evernote, you’ll use less paper and you won’t forget things nearly as often.I can envision using Evernote for tax information — receipts for tax-deductible expense could be photographed or scanned into Evernote, then tagged as you need.Storing critical information in Evernote protects you in the case of a devastating fire or other catastrophe that destroys your home. You’ll still have your documents even if you lose your computer and mobile devices as your data is all stored in the cloud and can be accessed from any internet-connected device.2. Declutter• My husband, Jim, despite 30 years in IT management, is still a notepaper (index cards) and pen guy. He’s now in real estate, so can you imagine how many cluttery pieces of note paper he has lying around? He knows how to use Evernote, and I’ve tried to convince him for years to use it more.If you need to decrease clutter, you can take pictures of notes and documents and store them in Evernote. The text in the image will be searchable so you’ll be able to find things much more easily.3. Keep Private Documents Private • For private documents, you can password protect a note so only someone with the password can open it. No more worries about someone discovering your secret file drawer.4. Keep it With You Wherever You Go • Evernote’s mobile app is excellent and has the same functionality as the desktop app. It’s laid out a little differently, but it’s all there. Keep important information like your list of medications in Evernote and in an emergency you’ll have easy access to vital medical information. You can also save photos and images easily from your phone. I’ve taken photos of wines and products I like and stored them in Evernote. It can also record the location of images, depending on your location settings, so if you forget where you were when you took that photo, Evernote has your back.5. Learning — Online and Offline • I like to take online classes. I’ve done certification classes in marketing and Evernote is a great place to collect all my notes, screenshots from online presentations and webinars, and course information. I can go back and review it any time, and it’s on my phone for the times I’m waiting somewhere and need reading material.I used it for in-person classes too (pre-COVID-19). I’d either type on my phone or take my laptop with me and just type my notes into Evernote instead of more paper.Truthfully, I can’t read my own handwriting anymore anyway, so it just makes sense. And it’s great to have the notes organized and the papers tend to get lost.6. It’s a Great To-Do List • There’s a whole system of task management called The Secret Weapon that uses Evernote and a system called Getting Things Done to manage tasks. It’s a great system and I go back to it from time to time.Read the blog post here: https://bethgsanders.com/how-to-use-evernote-to-organize-everything/______________________________________________________________________Book Me to Speak 📣: https://bethgsanders.com/speaking/Get Help With Social Media 📲: https://bethgsanders.com/social-media-management/Subscribe

What Can Evernote Do For Me?
1. Organize Information • Whether I’m organizing recipes, information gathering for an upcoming trip, or working with clients, it’s been an invaluable app for me. If you know how to use Evernote, you’ll use less paper and you won’t forget things nearly as often.

I can envision using Evernote for tax information — receipts for tax-deductible expense could be photographed or scanned into Evernote, then tagged as you need.

Storing critical information in Evernote protects you in the case of a devastating fire or other catastrophe that destroys your home. You’ll still have your documents even if you lose your computer and mobile devices as your data is all stored in the cloud and can be accessed from any internet-connected device.

2. Declutter• My husband, Jim, despite 30 years in IT management, is still a notepaper (index cards) and pen guy. He’s now in real estate, so can you imagine how many cluttery pieces of note paper he has lying around? He knows how to use Evernote, and I’ve tried to convince him for years to use it more.

If you need to decrease clutter, you can take pictures of notes and documents and store them in Evernote. The text in the image will be searchable so you’ll be able to find things much more easily.

3. Keep Private Documents Private • For private documents, you can password protect a note so only someone with the password can open it. No more worries about someone discovering your secret file drawer.

4. Keep it With You Wherever You Go • Evernote’s mobile app is excellent and has the same functionality as the desktop app. It’s laid out a little differently, but it’s all there. How Do You Use a Style Guide?
Nine Common Questions that a Style Guide Will Answer

There are many more questions, but these nine are the ones I’ve looked up most frequently and have the most questions about.

Which Style Guide to Use

There are numerous style guides for different writing purposes. The Chicago Manual of Style is used primarily in the book publishing industry. In academia, you’ll find Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association stylebooks. In the news and journalism world, the AP Stylebook (Associated Press) is most used. The AP Stylebook was originally created for newspapers, where space has traditionally been scarce, so it leans toward saving characters wherever possible.

Because it’s used by journalists, AP is the most current. It’s updated every year, so if you need guidance regarding technology or world events, it’s an excellent resource.

Although writing for the web does not necessitate space-saving measures, web copy should be brief and to the point, with short sentences and bullet lists preferred over paragraphs. For this reason, when a style guide is used, much of the web follows AP style.
Create Your Own Brand Style Guide

No matter which style guide you use, there will be areas in which you may differ with their choices.

For example, on this site, I follow AP style with a couple of exceptions. I use italics for titles of books, magazines, and works of art, whereas AP does not use italics at all.

I also firmly embrace the Oxford Comma; that is the comma after the and in a series. For example: I had bacon, eggs, and toast for breakfast.

They have copied TikTok much like they copied Instagram Stories from Snapchat, and Stories have been wildly successful. Instagram Reels is Instagram’s answer to TikTok. They have copied TikTok much like they copied Instagram Stories from Snapchat, and Stories have been wildly successful. Time will tell who wins the short-form video battle, but I’d place my money on Instagram — especially in light of the president’s threat to ban TikTok in the U.S.

According to AdWeek, in the first quarter of 2020, TikTok generated “the most downloads for any app ever in a quarter.” The platform now has more than 100 million American users.

Instagram Reels rolled out to all users this past Wednesday, August 5. The feature allows users to upload 15-second videos, much like on TikTok. It lives within the Stories feature and users have access to the same augmented reality (AR) features as in Stories. Users can add popular music available from licensed music companies.

Unlike Stories, Instagram Reels will remain permanently on your profile at the top, between the Feed and IGTV icons, unless you choose to share your Reels in Stories — then they’ll disappear after 24 hours.

Social media listening is often called ethical eavesdropping. You’re listening online to what social media users say about you. Social media listening is often called ethical eavesdropping. You’re listening online to what social media users say about you. What if you could get honest opinions about how your customers and prospects feel about your products and services?A popular author tells a story about a man he sat next to on a flight who was holding one of his most recent books. The man didn’t recognize the author, even though his photo was on the back of the book jacket. The author seized the opportunity and asked the man what he thought of the book. He knew he’d get an honest opinion, as the man had no idea he was speaking to the book’s author. That’s what social media listening can do for you. You’ll hear what real customers are saying about your brand while you’re not around. Or at least not visibly around. It’s called ethical eavesdropping because you’re only listening to conversations that are already public on social media. Users are free to post — or not post — whatever they like within certain boundaries, so if it’s out there, it’s fair game.Don’t you want to know what others are saying about you?Timestamps:
