Do you repurpose content?

Here’s what I mean by that. Say I write a great blog post (like this one, I hope). If I’m smart, I don’t stop at one great blog post, I create multiple pieces of content from this idea.

If I repurpose content wisely, I can also create a video, an Instagram story, an Instagram multi-image post, a Pinterest post, a podcast episode, an ebook, and, if I’m really feeling ambitious, an infographic. I could also take an old post and update it, adding more timely information and statistics. All from one idea. See how that works?

It’s a bit like buying a tool you can use in multiple ways. My iPad, for example. I invested in a new iPad this year which I use as a teleprompter when I record videos, to preview websites I build on different screen sizes, and to keep up with email and access files when I’m on the go. It’s less cumbersome to carry around than my laptop, so I take it with me most of the time. I also do my crossword puzzles on it, and have been know to play a game or two. Not only does it help with work, it can be an excellent relaxation device. One investment, multiple benefits.

How to Repurpose Content

April 21, 2021 11:19 am

When I get asked by clients how to create web images for their blog or website, I generally point them to Canva, the outstanding web-based freemium image editor. My youngest daughter is a blogger, and I taught her about Canva — she was amazed that her old mom had taught her, a 29-year-old, about a piece of useful technology.

I use Adobe Creative Suite apps Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to create and edit my images, but these apps are expensive and have a steep learning curve. Canva is an excellent alternative.

Why it Matters

Websites are full of images that help tell your story and illustrate your copy. Web images break up large bits of copy and help attract readers’ eyeballs.

With Google’s increasing emphasis on site speed as a ranking factor it’s not only important to have beautiful, professional images on your site, but it’s a vital part of your site’s design process to optimize the images for fast loading.
Types of Web Images

There two basic types of images: raster and vector.

A raster image is made up of pixels and cannot generally be enlarged significantly. If you try to enlarge a raster image it will become blurry and pixelated. A photograph is an example of a raster image.

Vector images, as described by Adobe, are built by mathematical formulas that establish points on a grid. They can be infinitely resized without losing sharpness or clarity. An example of a vector image is a logo or piece of line art.

Most of the websites I design these days come with a request for an event calendar. It’s an important part of a business or organization’s website and one that can be difficult to implement well.

About a year ago, I found the Modern Events Calendar (MEC) plugin after using other event calendar plugins and found them adequate, but not exactly right for my needs.

I found MEC by accident after I became frustrated with a plugin I’d used before on other sites. A Google search on *alternative to … “ took me to this plugin that, at least for me, is a better solution.

I’m using the free version, which works well for my needs but there is a premium version if you need more functionality.

WordPress Event Calendar Plugin: Modern Events Calendar

March 30, 2021 2:11 pm

If you have read anything about online marketing, you’ve heard about a landing page. But what is a landing page and why do you need one?

Have you ever tried to look very hard at something and you squint to see it better? The reason it works is that when we squint, fewer light rays enter the eye. This is known as the pinhole effect and it works because it prevents unfocused light rays from entering the retina.

What does the pinhole effect have to do with marketing? In the same way you’re filtering out extraneous light rays, a landing page allows you to filter out distractions that may keep a reader from buying your product or service.

A landing page is different from every other page on your website. It has one purpose: to persuade the reader to do what it is you want them to do. That may be buy a product, sign up for your email list, or request more information.

It’s completely focused on what’s called a conversion, which is when the reader follows through on the action you want them to perform.

For example, if you are trying to build an email list, you’ll offer a giveaway of some sort, maybe a guide or cheat sheet. You might run an ad or just have a signup form on your website that mentions your giveaway and contains copy that makes it sound irresistible. When the reader clicks on your ad, they are taken to a special page that is laser focused on your call to action (CTA), which is what you want them to do.

In our email list building example, a conversion would happen when a reader completes the form and confirms (if you have your email list set up for double opt-in) their interest in joining your list.

So we could say a landing page uses the pinhole effect to shut out distractions and focus your reader on the offer and encourage them to take action.

WordPress is an excellent platform on which to build a website. For new users, it’s often scary to make changes to the site for fear of causing a problem. That’s why it’s critical to understand WordPress troubleshooting so you don’t feel the urge to panic when something goes wrong.

Sometimes when something goes wrong, you’ll still have access to the admin area, but there may be times when you don’t, so I’ll cover both situations.

Before we get started, let’s talk about one of the most important parts of maintenance of your site: backups. If you haven’t been backing up your site regularly, this experience will make a believer out of you. If you have, you’ll breathe a sign of relief.

I make changes and post new content frequently on my site, so I have daily backups. That way if something goes horribly wrong, I can easily recover the site. Before you begin troubleshooting, clear your browser cache and/or view your site in a private window.

If you have access to your admin area, you might want to install a maintenance plugin so you’re not showing your errors to the world. You’ll need FTP access and WordPress admin access (in the admin user role).

What’s the Block Editor?

You may also have heard the WordPress block editor referred to as Gutenberg, which is the code name for the WordPress team’s redesign of the text editor. WordPress calls it a

"… modular approach to pages and posts: each piece of content in the editor, from a paragraph to an image gallery to a headline, is its own block."

— WordPress.org

Not only does the block editor come with its own set of blocks, many plugins add a block of their own. For example, Gravity Forms makes it simple to add a form of your choosing, which I’ll go into in more detail in another post.

There’s also a free plugin from Brainstorm Force called Ultimate Add-ons for Gutenberg that adds additional blocks. You can read about it here.

Flipboard is one of my favorite tools for content discovery and reading on a variety of topics. I don’t read a lot of books, but I read online articles all the time.

Flipboard was originally exclusively an iPad app. I remember when the original iPad was first available in 2010. This was one of the apps that best displayed the power and beauty of the new device. I didn’t get an iPad until 2011 (the iPad 2). For the record, I stood in line at our local Apple store for about 12 hours.

When I got my new iPad home, Flipboard was one of the first apps I installed and it’s been on all my mobile devices since. It’s a beautiful interface and allows the reader to flip pages as if looking at a print magazine.

Several years ago I discovered that Flipboard was available as a web app, and I use it daily since then. Not only is it a lovely browsing experience, it’s a valuable way to discover new and interesting content.

Should you use slang in business writing? The best answer is “it depends.” It depends on your audience, your brand, and other factors.

Slang vs. Jargon

Slang and jargon are two different types of language. Jargon is specialized terminology that is used by professional or avocational groups, and only understood by those in these groups.

To illustrate, here’s a bit of baseball jargon that any serious fan would know, but a casual fan might not:

Uncle Charlie was really working for him today.

Uncle Charlie is a nickname for a curve ball. The sentence above means that the pitcher’s curveball is effective at getting batters to strike out on this particular day.

Slang would be,

    His curveball was lit today.

Lit, a slang term that means really great, doesn’t require knowledge of baseball to understand.

Slang is available to all and, according to Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips blog,

Slang is made of informal words and phrases that originate in speech, and often includes substitutions for formal words …

If you go to a conference, you’ll hear a lot of jargon, but probably not as much slang. Professional jargon is often a shortcut to making your message understood.

If you’ve ever heard two physicians talking about work, you’ve hard professional jargon. Rather than explaining that the patient had dizziness that was inner-ear related, one might say to the other, The patient was vertiginous, and I suspect benign positional vertigo. That tells much more of the story without using more words.

Slang can help give us a sense of belonging to a group, or it can quickly let us know we don’t belong. It can give the reader a sense that the writer understands them, that they have something in common. If you use it, be sure you know what you’re saying and that it sounds genuine. There’s nothing worse than a writer or speaker who tries to use slang they don’t understand to appear more hip, younger, or more connected than they are.

Slang and Jargon: Can You Use Them in Business Writing?

October 13, 2020 2:05 pm

If you’re a WordPress user, you’ve probably heard of Gravity Forms. It’s one of the leading form building plugins, and can do anything from a simple contact form to a college admission application.

I’ve used Gravity Forms for many years. At first, I found it intimidating, but once I installed the plugin and started using it, I realized how simple it really is to create forms.

As a reminder, a WordPress plugin is a piece of software that you install on WordPress that provides a bit of extra functionality.

Here are some excellent ways to use email marketing automation:
1. Welcome Sequence

The welcome sequence triggers automatically when someone joins your list. It first delivers your lead magnet — the free content you promised in exchange for the user’s email address.

OptinMonster found that “ … an automated welcome email series instead of a single welcome email can increase revenue by 13%.” A sequence is often a series of five or six emails sent a certain number of days apart. That’s set up when you add your sequence to your account.

For example, you may send the lead magnet link first, with an introduction to who you are and what you do. Your goal is to make the user feel valued and important as you help them understand how you can make their life easier.

Other emails can be focused on success stories, ways your product can be used, or aspirational photos that remind the user why they are interested in your product.

Here’s an excellent example by Peloton, who makes high-end interactive exercise equipment. I like this email because it shows the reader faces of their instructors, which adds a personal component, and the instructors, while they look fit and toned, look as if they could be your physically active co-worker or best friend.
welcome email series

And let’s be truthful, the instructor photos are aspirational; who doesn’t look at these folks and imagine themselves looking like that? Even if we’re not wiling to admit it …

Lead Nurturing

Depending on the type of product you sell, your customers may or may not be ready to buy immediately. Now that they have given you their email address, they are a warm lead, which means they have expressed interest in you, but perhaps aren’t quite to the credit card number phase.

Email marketing automation can help you nurture those users through the buying process. Especially with an expensive product like Peloton, it will probably take most purchasers a bit of time to get used to the idea of spending $2000 or so on a piece of fitness equipment.

Abandoned Cart

We’ve all gotten the e-commerce triggered email. That is, if you’ve ever left an item you were thinking about purchasing in your shopping cart. The subject lines are often “Did you forget?” or, “You left something behind.”

According to Drip, roughly 75% of all shopping carts are abandoned. That means only one in four customers complete the purchase. You can recover those sales before you even know the cart has been abandoned.

Smart marketers use thank you emails to, of course, thank the customer for buying, but also to show related products. If you just bought the top, you’ll never be more tempted to get the matching pants or jacket than right after you’ve purchased.
