WordPress is an excellent platform on which to build a website. For new users, it’s often scary to make changes to the site for fear of causing a problem. That’s why it’s critical to understand WordPress troubleshooting so you don’t feel the urge to panic when something goes wrong.

Sometimes when something goes wrong, you’ll still have access to the admin area, but there may be times when you don’t, so I’ll cover both situations.

Before we get started, let’s talk about one of the most important parts of maintenance of your site: backups. If you haven’t been backing up your site regularly, this experience will make a believer out of you. If you have, you’ll breathe a sign of relief.

I make changes and post new content frequently on my site, so I have daily backups. That way if something goes horribly wrong, I can easily recover the site. Before you begin troubleshooting, clear your browser cache and/or view your site in a private window.

If you have access to your admin area, you might want to install a maintenance plugin so you’re not showing your errors to the world. You’ll need FTP access and WordPress admin access (in the admin user role).

WordPress Troubleshooting #WordPress

February 23, 2021 11:42 am

You don’t have to be particularly internet savvy to know that a mobile website is a necessity. More users view websites on mobile devices than on desktop computers, which has been the case since 2016.

Fortunately, most modern WordPress themes are responsive and some work better than others on smaller screens. Page builders Divi and Elementor provide the same ease of use for mobile page design as for desktop.

In this video I’ll talk about two of the most popular page builders for WordPress and how to use them to build mobile websites that work.

If you want to build your design mobile first, open the mobile view in either page builder when you start and design from there. Once you have your mobile design, adapt it to larger screen sizes.

As a reminder, even though your page looks great in the preview, always check it on an actual phone or tablet.

Why WordPress Performance Matters
Today’s internet users are generally not patient sorts of folk. We’ve all been conditioned to get what we want and to get it fast. Amazon gets us the goods we ordered in a day — or sometimes less. We download books to our iPads and readers instantly instead of waiting for the book to arrive by what we now call snail mail.

That’s why your website speed makes a difference. Kissmetrics reports that 40 percent of users will abandon a website that takes more than three seconds to load. Ouch. That and the fact that site speed factors into Google rankings means it’s more critical than ever to optimize your WordPress performance.

What’s the Block Editor?

You may also have heard the WordPress block editor referred to as Gutenberg, which is the code name for the WordPress team’s redesign of the text editor. WordPress calls it a

"… modular approach to pages and posts: each piece of content in the editor, from a paragraph to an image gallery to a headline, is its own block."

— WordPress.org

Not only does the block editor come with its own set of blocks, many plugins add a block of their own. For example, Gravity Forms makes it simple to add a form of your choosing, which I’ll go into in more detail in another post.

There’s also a free plugin from Brainstorm Force called Ultimate Add-ons for Gutenberg that adds additional blocks. You can read about it here.

If you’re a beginner, this basic WordPress post will help you find your way through the admin area — the back end. Once you know your way around, WordPress is easy to use. Even if you’re an experienced developer you may not be aware of all that WordPress can do.

As the most popular content management system (CMS), WordPress powers about 39.8% of the internet and its popularity is growing. It has grown from a blogging platform to a full-fledged CMS since I first started using it in 2006.

To log in to the admin area, go to yoursite.com/wp-admin. I suggest you create a permanent bookmark in your browser to make it easy to log in. Here’s a short video that will show you how.

Website Goals

First, we must consider the goal of our site. Let’s ask ourselves a few questions.

What do we want our website to do?

    Sell a product or service.
Inspire readers to learn more about a cause.
    Collect donations to a nonprofit.

Who is your target audience?

What specific features do you need? Some examples:

    Contact form.
    Events calendar.
    Photo gallery.
    Social media integration.
    Blog

If you’re going to include a blog, what topics will you write about?

Are there existing branding guidelines, such as logo, colors, or font styles that must be incorporated?

Take all of these factors into account as you consider the look and functionality of your site.

Before we dive in, there are two ways to build pages in Divi. The Visual (front end) Builder and the back-end builder. The Visual Builder allows you to see your changes as you make them on your live page.

To use the back-end builder, you’ll have to go to Divi Theme Options/Builder/Advanced and toggle on Enable Classic Builder. However, you can get the same view by using the wireframe view in the Visual Builder, so that’s where I’ll focus for this post.

This week we’re going to get started with the Divi Builder. In last week’s post, we covered Divi Theme Options and the Customizer settings. These are the first steps as you set up your Divi website.

Now we’ll get into the Divi Builder and how to use it to craft web pages that fit your needs and help get your message across.

Introduction to the Divi Builder

January 12, 2021 6:02 pm

For the next few weeks, I’m going to focus on the Divi theme for WordPress. It’s an insanely popular theme that offers a drag-and-drop page builder. Divi Builder is also available as a plugin for any site — even one that doesn’t run Divi.

The Divi theme is flexible enough to allow you to create nearly any layout you can imagine. If you’re not feeling creative, Divi offers numerous templates and layouts that you can adapt for your own purposes.

A Few Divi Getting-Started Tips

— Install the Elegant Themes Updater plugin. That will allow the end user to update Divi easily. Divi pushes updates frequently, so this is important.
— Instead of Divi’s built-in social media integration, I prefer Social Warfare. [WordPress Social Sharing Plugin – Social Warfare – WordPress plugin | WordPress.org] Divi only includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Google Plus (which is no more), so it’s pretty limiting.
— If you need to get a website up and running very quickly, browse the Divi Layouts page on Elegant Themes’ website [Divi Library | Elegant Themes]. You can download any of these templates for a quick start and design inspiration if you need it.

What are WordPress plugins? A plugin is a piece of software that provides additional functionality beyond the WordPress core. There are plugins for just about everything you’d ever want to add to your website.

Many plugins are free, and numerous plugins offer a premium level. Depending on your needs, you can often use the free version unless you need the increased functionality the premium version provides.

In this post, I’ll discuss what I think are vital plugins, and some others that you may or may not need.

WordPress describes itself as

… open source software you can use to create a beautiful website, blog, or app.

Open source software is software that is free to use and open to developers to contribute to. Its source code is readily available to the public.

In contrast, with proprietary software like Microsoft Word and the Adobe Creative Suite, the source code is not readily available and developers are legally prohibited from copying and modifying the software.

What does all of that mean? It means much more, but for the purpose of this post, it means that WordPress is free to use. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t expenses related to owning a website or blog (we’ll get to those in a minute).
What’s a Content Management System?

WordPress is what’s known as a content management system or CMS. A CMS is built in a way that allows you to edit your own website, and its content is organized so that it maximizes discoverability by search engines.
What’s the Difference in WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

Both are free to use. WordPress.com is hosted by WordPress on their servers. WordPress.org is the self-hosted version. The two versions work identically for the most part, although WordPress.com offers far more limited control.

I like to compare this to a home. If you rent a home, you don’t have to worry if the roof needs replacing, as it’s the landlord’s problem. While you can use any sort of furniture and accessories you choose, you can’t tear down walls. You trade the responsibilities and expenses of home ownership for the ease of use of a rental property.

But what if you want to tear down a wall? Or move a room? Or build a pool in the back yard? Paint a wall? While your landlord may let you paint a wall, if you want to do major renovations, you’ll want to do it in a house you own. If you use the self-hosted version, you have complete freedom where your website is concerned — you can add any plugin or code you like and customize your theme completely to your liking.
