With Elizabeth, Matthew and Dave from LunaWeb
Confession: I hate the sound of my voice. I think I sound like a hick. But when my good friends at LunaWeb asked me to be a guest on the Social Expedition podcast, I couldn’t say no. These guys work very hard to sponsor, promote and organize BarCampMemphis, SocialCamp Memphis and the monthly social media breakfasts that this confirmed night owl actually looks forward to getting up early for.
Elizabeth, Matthew and Dave made it fun, non-stressful and easy — we chatted about WordPress, location-based social networking, conferences and the positive energy that the entrepreneur and tech community is creating in Memphis. And they were so nice I let them take my picture.
If you don’t mind my hick southern accent, I’d love for you to listen here. Subscribe to the podcast in iTunes here.

My personality exhibits some symptoms of creativity: I use a Mac, love to design things, am a night owl, thrive on deadlines, cannot deal with numbers, and am at times disorganized and scatterbrained. I’m great at seeing the big picture, but not always so great at figuring out how to actually do what’s in the picture.
Sometimes I wish I were more organized, better with numbers, less forgetful and could sleep and wake on a more traditional schedule. But I’d really rather be better at being creative. Like these people, who have actually told the story of the Bible in Lego® blocks.
What a cool idea. I think I’ll go stimulate the right side of my brain now.

I read a lot, look at zillions of Web sites and check out print pieces everywhere I go. Though I’m a laid-back person, there are some things I’ve been seeing a lot of lately that are like that certain sound that we all hate.
- “Scare” quotes. Quotes are not for emphasis. They are for quotes.
- Comic Sans, anywhere, any time. Enough said.
- Apostrophe’s used incorrectly. Yes, I know. I meant to.
- Serif fonts used on the Web.
- People that … ; it’s people who, things that.
- Word art. If it can be created in a piece of software by Microsoft®, don’t use it in your print piece/on your Web page.
- Underlining. It’s just ugly. Typewriters are over.
- Exclamation points! Especially more than one!! If you need them your writing is probably weak.
Thanks for listening. I just had to vent. What make your skin crawl?

Just finished this book. I will say that it helped me get excited about writing again. It freed my mind to think about writing not as something that always has to be immediately productive, but can be creative for its own sake. The chapters are brief and easy to read, but there is a lot I just couldn’t relate to and some of it is just BS. I’m no book reviewer (obviously!) but I’ve bookmarked a couple of pages and will probably refer back to it again.
