Getting in Shape

OK, I’m finally sick of Photoshopping myself to look thinner, so I’ve decided I’m going to get in shape for real this time. I’m back on the medicine for my cervical disk pain and I have new running shoes, so I’ve started running again.

In graduate school I lived in the medical center area and would run around the UT Medical complex and Forrest Park until a guy stopped in a car and told me I had no business running alone in that neighborhood.

A couple of years ago I did the Memphis Runners’ and Track Club’s Women and Running class and enjoyed it, but the cervical disk sidelined me just as I was building up endurance.

A crucial piece of equipment for the runner is the iPod. I use my green shuffle, loaded with music that is motivational to me. It’s an eclectic list.

I decided I would keep myself accountable and chart my progress here. I ran yesterday — just over 2 miles, with at least 1/3 running. Not bad for the first time out in about 6 days, but still much room for improvement. My immediate goal is a 5K.
