Blog Action Day: Poverty

Isn’t it funny that I recently posted about iPhone applications? And now I’m talking about poverty. What does that say about me? Hypocritical? Selfish? Or just overwhelmed and feeling helpless?

If I’m honest, I’d say it’s a combination of all of the above. Compared to others in our community, we live a modest life; our house needs work — lots of work. We don’t take vacations and if you’ve seen me you know my wardrobe is pretty limited. We rarely eat out anymore. We have made these sacrifices with no regrets, as, since 1994, my desire has been to be a full-time homemaker.

As a Christian, it’s a command and calling to do what I can for the poor. Yet I whine about the luxuries I do without by my own choice when others do without necessities and have no choice.

My wardrobe? I may not be particularly stylish, but I have enough clothes to keep me warm. My house isn’t magazine-ready, but it’s warm in winter and cool in summer. We may not dine in the finest restaurants, but we always have enough to eat.

I resolve to focus less on what I do not have and be more grateful for what I do have. I will do more than feel sorry for those in need; I’m going to find practical ways to serve and to help.

There are no revenues from this blog to donate; but maybe if I put this goal in writing, it will hold me accountable. If it motivates one person to care more, to give more or to do more, then I’ve taken the first step.
