about bgs

i’m a freelance geek: graphic designer, writer, editor, social media nut and WordPress nerd. I love pretty much anything communications-related.
Many churches, nonprofits and small businesses lack the resources to staff a full-service communications department; I’m a valuable partner to these organizations as I use my God-given passion and gift for writing, design and technology to help them accomplish their mission and establish a strong presence in the community.
I’m involved with Memphis Social Media Expedition, a group that explores social media and its applications in all areas of life, from public relations and online marketing to lifestreaming, photosharing and social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn. As the unique relational needs of churches, ministries, charities and other nonprofits make these organizations particularly well-suited to social media, I plan to increase my focus in this area in 2010.

My husband, Jim, and I have two girls, one in high school, one in college. Jim is an even bigger geek than I am, a great photographer, amazing grill cook and very handy around the house. He can do things with a spreadsheet that will bring tears to your eyes. Ask him about he distribution of different colors in a sampling of Skittles packages; he has an Excel file for that. Now a confirmed Mac user, it took me years to cajole him away from the Dark Side. His day job is Vice President, Applications Development at Fred’s, Inc.

These are my girls, Sara Ann, 17 and Elizabeth, 21. Despite their years of resistance, they have both become pretty geeky: Sara Ann is a brilliant writer, editor of the newspaper at Houston High School here in Germantown, and a blogger. Elizabeth studies art and graphic design at Ole Miss, can do better bezier curves than I can and is a whiz at video editing. We will launch her Web site very soon. They make me proud; they are amazing young women and how many moms can claim that 100 percent of their offspring have their own Web presence. Now if I can just get them to tweet …
In the unlikely event that they see this, they are going to kill me for posting this photo.
